I guess that would really depend. Right now it would be nice to get them often considering how quickly you are adding fixes / features / etc. Once the product is more feature complete there is no need to release just because people say they want releases every x days. Of course ASAP after patches would be nice, especially if it breaks my new favorite addon. Seeing as you're asking about Releases, I use a program called WoWMatrix (http://www.wowmatrix.com) to keep my addons up to date. When it runs it sees v1.23 as the latest version. I'm not sure where the author is looking, but it would be nice if he pulled the current version. This way I don't have to worry about missing an update. Thanks!

version 1.23 is not the Pay-to-use version. It is the FREE version called Carbonite QUEST.

If your looking to have wowmatrix download the latest version it will never happen ... Carbonite can only be downloaded here.

Carbonite will inform you through a pop up when a new version is available in game. Assuming at least you have that option turned on ... so you will never miss an update.

I see ... seeing as the pay version needs to be authorized by logging in as the toon you registered with, why would this never happen? I could understand if there was no activation in place. Just curious. It's good to know about the pop-up. I'll double check my options to make sure I have it checked.

Each download is built by our server based on your account information. Any update program would have to log in to our website to get the file.

As long as you don't check "Disable global channel" you will get a newer version message once every 8 hours when a new version is detected.

I get my addons (other then Carbonite) from curse.com and I have the Curse Client that downloads and installs an addon that i want from the site and it lets me know when an update is available. I like it, I havent used WoWMatrix before, does it work well??

     PS;  I LOVE CARBONITE!!!!

Frankly, I dont care how often updates are released, What I am totally fed up with is the "Update Natzi" that turns  off carbonite If i havent updated it, Leaving me with no log at all not even blizzards... If I have time to sit down and play. I dont want to have to stop what I am doing to go through the D/L unzip copy routine vefore i can play the game.. a warning is sufficient. i will D/L it when it is convient for me.. none of these updates have been "world changing"

Thanks.. for keeping it current but C'mon.. this aint Nasa its Warcraft..(Its more important than NASA)

I get the message one every 5 minutes when there is a new version out! And it gets VERY annoying. Because it just doesn't go away, until you update.

    Re: New Version Release Rate

I like the idea of frequent releases, especially to ensure that quest and routing information is both accurate and up-to-date with respect to current in-game content.

I did just subscribe to Carbonite, but I have to say that I was very hesitant to do so when it became clear that there is going to be a maintenance requirement on my end to appease the licensing and copy protection requirements of the developers.  Please allocate time towards providing a non-nagging method of update notification and copy protection.  As others pointed out, it's (in theory) a quick process to update and verify licensing for the end-user, it's still a hassle for the end-user, or at least for me.  If I've subscribed for a year, I'd like to be free of any (for lack of a better term) nagging for that year please.  Hopefully a solution can be found in the short term.

    Thanks!

    Re: New Version Release Rate

I would also like to second this request.

Also I dont think 4 days is enough of a warning. It should give you one notice when your less than 10 days from your addon expiring, and then not give you another notice that its about to expire until you are less than 5 days. when you are less than 5 days from having it expire the addon should only give you a notice the first time you log in each day. Once the 5 days are up the addon should just deactivate it self and stop loading. At that point in time there would be no more warnings or messages that it needs to be updated.

Really the way I see it we are just renting the services that you are providing, and as such it is our responsiblity to download the updates when they are availible, in exchange you agree to support the current and future versions of your addon and give careful consideration to any ideas for improvents that are given by members of the Carbonite Community.

To be honest, I don't like constantly having to fiddle with addons.  I like to be able to just sit down and play.  Carbonite already has more features than I care to use. I'd be perfectly happy to only have to get a fresh Carbonite when a patch breaks it.

I'm gonna have to +1 this. Unless it's a LONG time between patches and there's something big you've been working on there's no reason for "maintanence" releases. As far as your expiration code goes, instead of absolute time since release why not do simething like "1 month since release, or WoW ToC changes, whichever comes (first/second your choice)"

Personally, unless there are bugs fixes, critical updates, or changes made by Bliz to WOW, every two weeks is plenty.  With the instances quoted above, changes should be issued immediately.

    Re: New Version Release Rate

I suppose a key question to ask is if the development rate of Carbonite would continue independent (for the most part) of the release rate?

For example, say new features/data base updates/bug fixes are developed at a rate of 1 per day.  Then, if a new release was published every 2 weeks it would contain 14 updates.  Or if a new new release was published every week, it would contain 7 updates.

To put it another way, this survey was probably asking, "do you want more frequent smaller updates, or less frequent larger updates?"

    Re: New Version Release Rate

I would like to get new versions when they're ready. By making the jump to a paid add-on, you shift expectations. I'm willing to put up with the occasional glitch or bad release from freeware, but if I'm paying for it, it should work. I would like to point out that this is the only add-on I've ever paid for - it was that compelling.

Because of Carbonite's scope, it replaces a lot of specialty add-ons I was using. A buggy Carbonite release is much more likely to shut me down entirely than a buggy specialty release. I do appreciate you leaving previous versions available for download!

I love new features, but please make sure they're stable before a release. The frequency of a release isn't as important to me.
